Travel Diary: Mexico

Travel notes from 4 weeks in Mexico, Oaxaca, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo

After our first backpacking trip to Thailand, we want to explore somewhere on the other side of the world: Mexico. We took four weeks off work and decided to embark on a grand trip through some of Mexico's highlights. We started and ended our trip in Mexico City, had a bus trip to Oaxaca to experience Dia De Los Mertos and surfed on the waves of the Pacific Ocean. We flew to the other side of the country and with a rented car we visited one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and had a lot of beach days along the coast. Tanned, well-eaten and with a lot of new experiences, we flew back to Mexico City to return from our travels.

Mexico City

Mexico City was a city that I had heard a lot of mixed stories about. People warned us, since they had a lot of criminal associations with the city, but at the same time a lot of people elaborated on how beautiful the architecture and the greenery is throughout the city. I guess it has all the facets; and also as a tourist you aren't able to see the city in a few days like it truly is. However, I did really enjoy the time we've spent here.

We stayed in the more trendy neighborhoods like Roma and Condesa. They are very walkable, are very green and are filled with cute café's and vintage stores.

Puerto Escondido

My favourite spot of our entire trip. I loved the relaxed vibes in this surfers village. We found some great surfing school that taught us the beginner steps of surfing and the guys there were fantastic. There were great restaurants and cute stores. The beach is amazing: long and sandy with great sunsets.

We didn't really like Tulum. Too commercial and touristic.
